Choosing a Web Host and Setting Up Your Nameservers

How Blogs Add comments

Next step is to find a hosting service for your domain. What your looking for is service that is helpful and offers ease of use as well as plenty of features. As a user of several hosts over time my experience is that the very best is HostGator.com. Click the link and then click into ‘Shared’ and the ‘Learn More’ link to compare packages.

You can view the package details. The Hatchling account is an excellent account if you only intend to have a single domain. The only negative is you have to pay up for a year. The baby is next and offers monthly pay and unlimited domains with plenty of space for multiple blogs. This one will work for most. The next ones over are excellent as well.

What you really want is Fantastico in your control panel, 100G disk space and 1,000G bandwidth. Their control panel is cPanel and is as easy as it gets to use, here’s a free manual http://www.cpanel.net/docs/cpanel/. The packages come with plenty of email and auto-responder services so you’ll pretty much be all set.

Next check your email for your HostGator order and jot down the nameserver addresses, there will be two, something like ns???.websitewelcome.com and ns???.websitewelcome.com.

Just a little more work to do here. Bounce back to your GoDaddy account and login. Mouse over ‘Domains’ and slide down to ‘My Domain Names’ and click, then click on your domain name. This will bring up the ‘Domain Control Center’. In the middle of the page Look for ‘Nameservers’, click on one of them, they will start with ns? most likely.

On the page that comes up replace Nameserver 1 & 2 with your HostGator nameserver address’s and click ‘OK’. Log out of GoDaddy, your done. Your domain is about to go live we just have to put something on it. In the next post we’ll set up Wordpress as your blogging service on your domain.
